X HOUSE

Small House Competition

The X House is the first of a series of small house designs made from panelized and component parts. The house was designed for an ideas competition for a 1200 square foot house for a small family with a budget of $75 a square foot. Instead of designing for a nuclear family we assumed that the base package for the house would be for four separate individuals who shared a common dining table at the center of the house. Each quadrant has its own bathroom and cooking facilities and is made of flexible spatial components.

The construction is divided into four four by eight foot modules that can be reassembled into various configurations to open up the space and create common areas in the home. The plan version shown accommodates the small family stipulated in the brief. The physical model shows how extra bedroom modules and living space can be clipped to the main body of the X House.
